Bad News for Steelers: Matthew Stafford Update Shakes Offseason Plans

As the Pittsburgh Steelers evaluate their quarterback options—deciding whether to re-sign Russell Wilson or Justin Fields in free agency while keeping an eye on other potential candidates—one trade possibility may no longer be in play.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano on February 8, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is expected to stay in Los Angeles for the 2025 season.

“The past two seasons have been good for Stafford, who turned 37 on Friday and believes the Rams’ leadership gives them the ability to contend every year,” Graziano reported. He noted that Stafford’s contract will require restructuring, much like last offseason when the Rams adjusted his deal to guarantee him $40 million.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler backed up the report, stating that sources within the Rams organization don’t seem concerned about Stafford leaving, despite the financial complexities.

“By all accounts, Stafford was happy with the direction of the offense this season, and multiple people with the team say it doesn’t seem as if changes are coming,” Fowler added.

Steelers Among Teams Eyeing Stafford

The Steelers were expected to be among the teams interested in a Stafford trade. USA Today’s Steelers Wire and Bovada reported on February 8 that the Rams are favored to retain Stafford (-190 odds), while the Steelers and Raiders were tied at +400.

Trade speculation gained traction recently after comments from Stafford’s wife, Kelly Stafford, on her podcast, The Morning After. While expressing her love for Los Angeles, she also hinted at openness to a move.

“If someone doesn’t feel valued, then I’m like, let’s hit the road. Let’s go on an adventure,” she said, reacting to rumors of a Cooper Kupp trade and potential roster shakeups.

Could the Steelers Still Target Kupp?

If Stafford stays put, it’s a blow to the Steelers, who could have benefited from acquiring both a quarterback and a veteran wide receiver in a potential package deal. However, Pittsburgh may still consider pursuing Kupp separately.

With uncertainty surrounding their 2025 signal-caller, adding an experienced playmaker like Kupp could be a valuable move for a Steelers offense in need of weapons. The question remains—would the Rams be willing to part ways with their longtime star wideout?
