Ohio State’s defense was an absolute powerhouse this year, dominating in every key metric—points allowed, total yards, and passing defense. This stellar performance played a huge role in the Buckeyes taking home the national championship.
The man behind it all? Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. His defensive schemes transformed the team over the years, making him an essential piece of the coaching staff.
But success comes with a price. Even before the championship celebrations wrapped up, rumors swirled that other programs were trying to poach Knowles. In response, Ohio State is reportedly pulling out all the stops to keep him, offering a deal that would make him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football.
Right now, Michigan’s Wink Martindale holds that title, but if Knowles accepts this offer, he’ll top the pay charts. And honestly, he’s earned it. He’s proven he’s the best at what he does.
If he stays, Ohio State’s defense will be in solid shape, even with some big names leaving. Keeping Knowles would mean consistency and a smooth transition as they defend their championship. Safe to say, locking him in is priority number one for the Buckeyes.
