Here’s a quick update on Alabama Crimson Tide sports from the first weekend of May.
Baseball: Big Lead Slips Away in Vanderbilt Series
Alabama baseball had a chance to climb the SEC rankings this weekend in Nashville, but things didn’t go as planned. After getting crushed in the opener against Vanderbilt, they bounced back Saturday behind Riley Quick, who pitched a gem. He struck out nine over six innings and helped Bama take a solid 5–2 win.
Sunday looked promising, too. The Tide had a 7–2 lead going into the 8th, thanks to solid hitting and a good start from Zane Adams. But then the bullpen unraveled. Hagan Banks let Vanderbilt close the gap, and Carson Ozmer gave up a walk-off homer in the 9th. Just like that, Alabama dropped the series.
Now sitting at 36–12 overall and 13–11 in the SEC, the Tide will face Troy on Tuesday before closing the regular season at home against Georgia.
Softball: Hot Start, Cold Finish
It’s been a rough season for Alabama softball. They looked dominant in the opener at South Carolina with a 13–1 win, but couldn’t keep it going. They lost the next two games—one 3–1 and the other 7–2 (which got cut short due to weather). That dropped them to 36–20 overall and an even 12–12 in conference play.
Next up: the SEC Tournament in Athens, starting Tuesday with a first-round matchup against Auburn.
