Bama Strikes Again: Owen Cabell Adds Firepower to Crimson Tide Defense

Alabama continues to assert its dominance on the recruiting trail, landing a major defensive piece as four-star linebacker Owen Cabell officially announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide’s 2026 class on Sunday.

Cabell, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound standout from St. Augustine, Florida, is ranked among the top 10 linebackers in the nation and had offers from powerhouse programs including Georgia, Ohio State, and Florida State. But in the end, the lure of Tuscaloosa proved too strong.

> “Alabama felt like home,” Cabell said in a video posted to his social media accounts. “The culture, the tradition, the standard — it’s something I want to be a part of.”

The commitment marks another significant win for head coach Kalen DeBoer, whose first full recruiting cycle with the Tide is off to a blistering start. Cabell becomes the 11th commitment in Alabama’s 2026 class, which now ranks among the top three nationally, according to 247Sports.

Known for his explosive first step, lateral speed, and high football IQ, Cabell has been a nightmare for opposing offenses. He recorded 105 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, and 6 sacks in his junior season — earning All-State honors and solidifying his status as one of the most sought-after defenders in the country.

> “Cabell is a sideline-to-sideline linebacker with the instincts of a veteran and the motor of a top-tier SEC defender,” said recruiting analyst Evan Wallace. “He fits perfectly into what Alabama wants to do defensively.”

His decision also reflects the staying power of Alabama’s defensive brand, even after the retirement of legendary coach Nick Saban. Under DeBoer and new defensive coordinator Lance Thompson, the Tide are showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to attracting elite talent.

> “It’s about continuing the legacy,” Cabell added. “Coach DeBoer and Coach Thompson showed me how I’d be used — and I loved it. I’m ready to work.”

Cabell’s commitment gives Alabama a versatile chess piece in the middle of its future defense. He’s expected to thrive in multiple schemes, with the ability to drop into coverage, pressure the quarterback, and defend the run at a high level.

With Cabell on board, Alabama’s 2026 class adds another layer of strength and leadership on defense — and sends a clear message to the rest of the SEC: The Crimson Tide is still rolling.
