Banged Up Before Battle: Lions Missing 4 Key Players Ahead of Browns Showdown

The Detroit Lions’ Week 4 clash with the Cleveland Browns just got a little more complicated. Four players were absent from Friday’s practice, raising some red flags about their availability on Sunday.

Cunningham Officially Out

Dan Campbell confirmed that veteran linebacker Zach Cunningham is not expected to suit up against Cleveland. While Cunningham hasn’t logged many defensive snaps this season, he’s been a steady presence on special teams. His absence will put added pressure on the Lions’ depth at linebacker.

Decker’s Lingering Shoulder

The biggest concern is left tackle Taylor Decker. He hasn’t practiced all week with a shoulder injury, though he’s managed to perform well on game days despite limited reps. Campbell stressed the team is focused on keeping their longest-tenured Lion fresh enough to contribute on Sundays. “We want him feeling good for the game, and that’s the most important thing,” the coach said.

Vaki and Thomas Join the List

Second-year running back Sione Vaki is also sidelined with a groin injury, leaving Detroit thinner in its versatile backfield rotation. Meanwhile, safety Daniel Thomas underwent forearm surgery after playing through a broken bone in his hand. He’s been a key special teams contributor, especially as a punt gunner, and cornerback Khalil Dorsey may need to step up in his place.

Some Good News

Not all updates were gloomy. Pass rusher Al-Quadin Muhammad and linebacker Derrick Barnes are trending in the right direction despite nagging knee issues. Both practiced this week and appear ready to go against the Browns.

The Lions already face a tall order against Cleveland’s elite defense, and going into the game shorthanded makes the challenge even tougher. Sunday’s matchup may come down to grit — and who handles adversity better.
