Baseball can really mess with your head sometimes. In spring, a few good games, some solid hits, and a nice play here and there can make you think a player’s about to have a breakout season. But now that we’re into April, reality is setting in for some of the Mets players, and things are looking a little too familiar. It’s still early, but a few players are already showing signs that they might not be turning things around anytime soon.

1) Brett Baty

Brett Baty had a huge spring and seemed like the next big thing for the Mets. After some rough seasons, he was hitting like crazy in March, with a .353 average, 1.186 OPS, 4 homers, and 11 RBIs. Fans were pumped, thinking this was the start of something special. But fast forward to the regular season, and things aren’t looking so great. After 12 games and 27 at-bats, he’s only hitting .111 with a .259 OPS, plus 11 strikeouts. His swings aren’t making contact, and his overall approach at the plate looks shaky. On top of that, he’s letting the pressure affect his defense, with a big error in a recent game against the Marlins. Now, the manager’s being asked about Baty’s confidence — and that’s never a good sign this early in the season. With Jeff McNeil coming back soon, Baty might not get much more time to turn things around. If he doesn’t snap out of it, he might be headed to the minors.
