Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson recently took a subtle shot at Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff. Speaking to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine, Johnson praised his new quarterback, Caleb Williams, for his ability to extend plays and make things happen off-schedule.
“Listen, super talented. Out of structure, the off-schedule, the creation, that’s what stands out the most, because that’s really the way that this league is going right now,” Johnson said. “It seems like as much as you want to make it pure progression, 1 to 2 to 3, there’s just too much variety; the pass-rush is coming down. And to have an athlete like Caleb extend the play and potentially find an explosive [play] down the field, that’s what gets me going a little bit.”
Johnson’s comments seemed to imply that Goff lacks this ability, which could be seen as a slight against the Lions’ quarterback. Johnson worked with Goff during his time as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, helping the team become one of the top offenses in the NFL.
Despite Johnson’s comments, Goff has shown himself to be a capable quarterback who can make plays under pressure. However, Johnson’s remarks may have added fuel to the fire for the Lions and Goff, who will face the Bears again soon.
Johnson’s hiring as the Bears’ head coach has brought a new era of hope and excitement to the team. With Williams at the helm, the Bears are looking to build on their momentum and make a push for the playoffs.
It’s worth noting that Johnson’s comments may have been intended to praise Williams rather than criticize Goff. However, the subtle dig at Goff is likely to be noticed by the Lions and their fans, and could add an extra layer of intensity to the teams’ future matchups.
