The Bears have officially hired JT Barrett, a former Ohio State National Champion and Detroit Lions assistant, as their new quarterbacks coach under Head Coach Ben Johnson. This move is part of Johnson’s effort to build a strong coaching staff following his recent appointment as the Bears’ head coach.
Barrett, a four-year starter at Ohio State, is best remembered for leading the Buckeyes to a national championship in 2014. After a brief playing career, he transitioned into coaching, starting with the Detroit Lions as an offensive assistant in 2022. He was later promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach, where he played a crucial role in developing Jared Goff. Under Barrett’s guidance, Goff delivered consecutive seasons with over 4,500 passing yards and 30+ touchdowns.
Barrett now steps into a pivotal role with the Bears, tasked with shaping the development of Caleb Williams, the team’s young and highly touted quarterback. Williams, the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, showed flashes of brilliance in his rookie season, but consistency remains a key focus.
This hire, along with the addition of other talented coaches like Antwaan Randle El, signals a fresh start for the Bears’ offensive strategy. With a solid coaching foundation being built under Johnson, Chicago fans are optimistic about a significant turnaround in the 2025 NFL season.
