A Strategic Start for Ben Johnson
Ben Johnson, recently appointed as the head coach of the Chicago Bears, has already shown his ability to tactfully navigate tough questions. During his appearance on Breakfast Ball, Johnson was asked about his predecessor, Matt Eberflus, and the controversial decision that ultimately sealed his exit. Johnson, however, made it clear that he wasn’t interested in revisiting the past.
“We’re not going there today, we’re not going there,” Johnson said in response to host Danny Parkins’ question about how he would have handled the infamous situation.
Eberflus, who was fired shortly before NFL Week 14, faced criticism for a costly decision during a game against the Detroit Lions. The Bears were leading 20-16 with just 36 seconds remaining when quarterback Caleb Williams had possession of the ball. Instead of using a timeout to regroup, Eberflus hurried the offense, resulting in a turnover that led to a Lions comeback. Detroit scored the game-winning touchdown, and the Bears left the field defeated, 23-20.
A Season to Forget
Under Eberflus’ leadership, the Bears struggled throughout the season, finishing last in the NFC North with a dismal 5-12 record. The loss to the Lions seemed to epitomize the team’s inability to close out games.
Johnson, previously the offensive coordinator for the Lions, was brought in to turn things around. However, he has chosen not to comment on his predecessor’s decisions, preferring instead to focus on the future of the Bears.
