Ben Johnson Hopes Bears’ Former First-Round Pick Can Reach Penei Sewell’s Level

Ben Johnson is bringing his offensive expertise to Chicago, and he has high expectations for one of the Bears’ young linemen. The former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, now the Bears’ head coach, believes Darnell Wright has the potential to reach the level of All-Pro tackle Penei Sewell.

“We had the luxury of a very good offensive line [in Detroit], that’s what we look to capitalize on and feature,” Johnson said. “I see Darnell Wright very much in the same mold as a Penei Sewell.”

Johnson emphasized that the Lions highlighted Sewell in space, put him in one-on-one matchups, and used his athleticism to maximize his impact. He sees Wright fitting into a similar role with the Bears, adding that last year’s tape showed “a lot of promise” from the former first-round pick.

With Johnson and new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle now shaping Chicago’s attack, the Bears are looking to build a dominant front. If Wright can take the leap Johnson envisions, the Bears’ offensive line could become a major strength.
