Lions Urged to Pursue $39.8 Million Receiver
As the Detroit Lions look to strengthen their roster this offseason, much of the focus has been on their defense. However, one area that could use attention on the offensive side is the wide receiver position. Brandin Cooks, the Dallas Cowboys receiver with six 1,000-yard receiving seasons, has emerged as a potential target for the Lions in 2025.
Cooks has been a reliable presence throughout his career, consistently posting over 550 yards in every season prior to 2024. Though his production has slowed, with his last 1,000-yard season coming in 2021, he remains a dependable veteran across five NFL teams. Adding to the intrigue, Cooks has a past connection with Lions offensive coordinator John Morton, who coached him at the Saints from 2015-16.
However, Cooks is coming off a down year, where injuries limited him to just 10 games and resulted in career-low numbers. He averaged only 2.6 receptions and 25.9 yards per game in 2024. His performance has been declining for several seasons, making it unclear whether he can still provide the impact Detroit needs.
The potential fit for Cooks on the Lions would depend heavily on the price. With Tim Patrick hitting free agency and Josh Reynolds possibly being cut, the Lions may need a WR3. However, considering their existing talent in Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, and Jahmyr Gibbs, receiver depth isn’t a top priority. If Detroit could acquire Cooks at a bargain price, he could provide valuable veteran experience as a backup or depth option, but the team may explore other cheaper alternatives as well.
Verdict: The Lions could benefit from Cooks’ veteran presence, but only if they can acquire him at a reasonable price given his recent decline. If he comes too expensive, Detroit might be better off looking for more affordable options.
