Big Talent, Low Price? Colts Eye Potential Steal in Former Top Pick

The Indianapolis Colts have taken a chance on quarterback Daniel Jones, signing him to a one-year, $14 million contract. While some fans aren’t thrilled about the deal, ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry sees it as a potential bargain.

Jones, the former No. 6 overall pick in 2019, arrives in Indy after a rocky few years. He’s expected to compete with Anthony Richardson for the starting job. If he wins the battle and performs well, the Colts might just have landed themselves a steal.

Jones’ Rollercoaster Career So Far

Jones started off as a highly-touted prospect when the New York Giants drafted him in 2019. But instead of becoming a franchise quarterback, he’s struggled with inconsistency and injuries. His best season came in 2022 when he threw for 3,205 yards, rushed for 708, and led the Giants to a playoff win over the Vikings.

That performance earned him a massive $160 million contract extension, but things quickly fell apart. He never replicated that success, was benched, and eventually cut. After a brief stint with the Vikings where he never played, he’s now looking for redemption in Indianapolis.

Can He Revive His Career?

The Colts hope Jones can turn things around like other quarterbacks have before him. Sam Darnold, another former top draft pick, revived his career last season and landed a $100 million contract with the Seahawks. Baker Mayfield also bounced back and became a key player for the Bucs.

Jones will now have a chance to prove himself against Richardson, who hasn’t quite lived up to expectations since being drafted. If Jones outperforms him and leads the Colts to a strong season, his signing could look like a major bargain.

Will “Danny Dimes” finally live up to his potential? Colts fans will have to wait and see.
