Big Words from a Giant: Strahan on Travis Hunter

The New York Giants have a big call to make with the No. 3 pick in this year’s NFL Draft. With Cleveland likely to snag either Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, or Abdul Carter, the Giants will probably have their pick of whoever’s left—which could still mean choosing between a top quarterback or one of the best non-QBs available.

While Sanders is definitely the most talked-about (and debated) player in the draft, Travis Hunter might be the most intriguing. The guy is a legit two-way star with huge potential. But that raises some big questions: Will he really play both offense and defense in the NFL? Which position will he focus on? And will it be up to him or the team to decide?

Right now, Hunter wants to prove he can do both, and honestly, he’s earned that shot. Looking at the Giants’ roster, they could really use help at corner. Veteran Paulson Adebo was a solid pick-up, but trusting Deonte Banks or Cor’Dale Flott as starters feels risky—especially in a season that could decide if head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen keep their jobs.

Giants legend Michael Strahan gave his two cents on the “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast. He said he’d play Hunter at corner—but only part-time. “I think he’s more of an impact as a wide receiver,” Strahan said. “Yeah, he’s a shutdown corner, but if you’re gonna use that energy, use it on offense. Pair him with Malik Nabers and it’d be almost impossible to stop them.”

Turns out, Strahan’s not the only one who sees Hunter as a receiver first. Browns GM Andrew Berry also mentioned at the NFL Combine that Hunter’s ball skills make him lean WR, too.

If the Giants go that route, they could end up with one of the most exciting WR duos the league’s seen in years. Sure, he might make a bigger difference at corner compared to Darius Slayton, but it’d be hard to criticize the Giants no matter what—especially if they let him try both sides of the ball.
