Blockbuster Move? Detroit Lions Linked to Trade for $80 Million All-Pro Receiver

Could Detroit reunite Cooper Kupp with Jared Goff to supercharge their offense?

The Detroit Lions are coming off a spectacular 15-2 season—their best in the Super Bowl era. Yet, despite their dominance, they fell short in the Divisional Round, leaving the franchise still searching for its first-ever Super Bowl appearance.

With both their offensive and defensive coordinators departing, the Lions face the challenge of improving an already strong roster. One way to take the next step? Add a proven playoff performer. And according to recent reports, Detroit might have its sights set on a major offensive weapon: All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

Could Detroit Reunite Goff and Kupp?

The Lions boast a dynamic receiving corps featuring two-time All-Pro Amon-Ra St. Brown and 2022 first-round pick Jameson Williams. Add in Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta, and it’s clear the team has firepower. However, there’s still room for improvement—specifically in the No. 3 wide receiver spot.

Last season, that role belonged to Tim Patrick, who is now set to hit free agency. With an opening in the lineup, Detroit could explore reuniting quarterback Jared Goff with his former Rams teammate, Cooper Kupp.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler recently linked Kupp to the Lions, suggesting Detroit as a potential trade destination for the former Super Bowl MVP:

“As far as early teams that people are bantering about, Pittsburgh Steelers looked into Cooper Kupp at the trade deadline last season. They still have a need there. Washington could look for a complement to Terry McLaurin. The Patriots would be foolish not to at least check in on this given their receiver situation. And here are a few surprises for you: Detroit Lions. Jared Goff came in the league with Cooper Kupp. That’s instant chemistry. And then doesn’t this feel like a Kansas City Chiefs move a little bit?”

What Would It Take to Land Kupp?

Kupp, who signed a three-year, $80 million extension with the Rams in 2022, still has two years remaining on his contract. His 2025 cap hit is set at $29.7 million, a hefty price tag that could require a restructure if a trade were to happen.

While the Rams are reportedly open to moving Kupp, the Lions wouldn’t be the only suitor. Fowler also mentioned the Steelers, Commanders, Patriots, and Chiefs as potential landing spots. Detroit would need to offer significant draft capital or player assets to beat out other contenders in a competitive trade market.

A Perfect Fit for Detroit?

On paper, Kupp’s arrival in Detroit makes a lot of sense. He and Goff already have four seasons of chemistry, and his ability to operate as an elite route-runner in the slot would give Detroit another lethal offensive weapon. If the Lions are serious about making a Super Bowl run in 2025, acquiring Kupp could be a game-changing move.

Now, the question remains: Will Detroit make the bold move to bring Cooper Kupp back to Jared Goff’s huddle?
