The Detroit Lions’ cornerback room has become quite crowded this offseason. Heading into 2025, they already had Terrion Arnold, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Amik Robertson, and Morice Norris returning from last season’s roster. But over the past few weeks, they’ve added even more depth by re-signing Khalil Dorsey and bringing in D.J. Reed, Avonte Maddox, and Rock Ya-Sin.
With so many players competing for spots, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox sees one of the returning players as a potential trade candidate. In an article discussing trades that could help contenders address their biggest weaknesses, Knox suggested that the Buffalo Bills should make a move for Robertson.
Right now, Robertson finds himself in a tough situation in Detroit. The Lions’ signing of Reed essentially guaranteed that Robertson won’t be a starter in 2025. While the other additions haven’t directly pushed him down the depth chart, they do add more competition to the rotation. His biggest challenge? He’s currently no higher than the third option, and with Rakestraw developing, he could drop even further. If Rakestraw earns the CB3 spot, Robertson’s role would shrink significantly in what could be his final year under contract.
On the other hand, the Bills could really use a cornerback. Last season, their defense was middle-of-the-pack when it came to yards allowed per passing attempt (7.1). Then, to make matters worse, they lost Rasul Douglas in free agency after he started 15 games for them.
That said, the Lions aren’t likely to give up depth unless it’s absolutely necessary. Injuries took a serious toll on them in 2024, so they’ll want to be cautious about making moves. However, if they see a free agent or draft prospect they really like, they might be more willing to consider a trade.
For now, a deal doesn’t seem imminent, but there’s still plenty of offseason left. If Detroit decides to move Robertson, Buffalo would be a logical landing spot.
