Bob Wojnowski: Lions Can’t Overlook Commanders and Dynamic Daniels

Favored Lions Prepare for Rookie Quarterback Test Against Commanders

The Detroit Lions open their playoff run as favorites, but their first challenge is anything but a walkover. Facing the Washington Commanders and rookie sensation Jayden Daniels, Detroit must navigate a high-stakes clash with a rising star who has quickly proven he belongs.

Daniels, Washington’s dual-threat quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, has fueled the team’s improbable playoff surge. After leading the Commanders to a wild-card win over Tampa Bay, Daniels’ composure and athleticism—both in the air and on the ground—pose a major test for the Lions’ defense.

“He’s dangerous. He plays beyond his years,” said Lions head coach Dan Campbell. “He’s got poise, great vision, and can extend plays with his legs. He’s a real threat.”

Though favored by 8.5 points, Detroit faces unique challenges. Their defense, reliant on blitzing under coordinator Aaron Glenn, will need to find answers for Daniels, who thrives under pressure. With running back David Montgomery back in action, Detroit aims to exploit Washington’s shaky run defense, ranked 30th in the league.

The Commanders, dubbed the “Cardiac Commanders” for their penchant for late-game heroics, enter with momentum. Washington has won six straight games, including five fourth-quarter comebacks. Daniels has been the driving force, posting a stellar passer rating when blitzed and racking up over 4,400 total yards this season.

For the Lions, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Carrying the weight of Super Bowl expectations, they’ll rely on veterans like Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown to shine under the Ford Field spotlight.

“It’s a big stage, but we’re used to it,” said Campbell. “We’ve seen ups and downs, but it’s time to perform. That’s the world we’re in.”

While Detroit has the edge in experience and home-field advantage, they’ll need discipline to avoid being upended by Washington’s fearless rookie. As Campbell noted, “You can’t pick your opponent, but you can choose your plan—and we like our chances.”

Will the Lions stay on track for a Super Bowl run, or will the Commanders’ rookie QB write the next chapter in their underdog story?
