Alabama pitcher Bobby Alcock made his first midweek start of the season on Tuesday and delivered a solid performance against UAB. Normally a Sunday starter, Alcock was moved out of the weekend rotation after a rough outing against Auburn, where he gave up four runs in just one-third of an inning.
Against UAB, though, he looked much better. Alcock pitched 3.2 innings and gave up just one run, setting the tone early with a scoreless first inning—something Alabama struggled to do in its weekend series against Mississippi State.
Head coach Rob Vaughn said Alcock wasn’t thrilled about the rotation change, but that’s what you expect from a competitor. “If he was happy about not starting on the weekend, we’d have a bigger problem,” Vaughn said.
Alcock, a transfer from Gardner-Webb who missed all of last season, has had some ups and downs this year. He threw seven shutout innings against Texas A&M back in March—still the best start by any Bama pitcher this season.
Vaughn said Alcock did exactly what the team needed with several other pitchers unavailable after the Mississippi State series. “He wasn’t perfect,” Vaughn admitted, “but he made some big pitches and gave us what we needed to start strong.”
Alcock’s ERA dropped from 5.97 to 5.57 after the game, and while he’s not in the weekend rotation right now, he’s proven he’s still a serious option for Bama when they need him.
