Brad Holmes Bashed for Drafting Tyleik Williams, but Critics May Regret It

Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes is taking heat for what some are calling the most surprising pick of the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft—but not everyone sees it that way.

With the No. 28 overall selection, the Lions chose Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams, catching analysts off guard. Critics, like FantasyLife’s Thor Nystrom, didn’t hold back—he handed the Lions an “F” grade and blasted the decision to pass on edge rushers in favor of a defensive tackle. But despite the backlash, there’s a strong case to be made for the pick.

Williams was a force at Ohio State, racking up 136 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, and 10 pass breakups across 51 games. He’s known for his quickness, strength, and relentless motor—traits that make him a natural fit for the Lions’ hard-nosed identity under Dan Campbell.

While edge rusher may have been a more obvious need, Williams brings versatility and disruptive power up front. If he develops as expected, this could end up being one of the steals of the draft—not a blunder.
