The Detroit Lions had an impressive run last season, finishing as the top team in the NFC during the regular season. However, their unexpected exit in the playoffs left many questioning what went wrong. Adding to the uncertainty, the Lions lost both their offensive and defensive coordinators in the offseason, leading some to speculate that the team may experience a setback in the upcoming season.
Despite the tough playoff loss, Detroit remains one of the most talented teams in the NFL, largely due to their strategic roster-building. They’ve consistently followed a “best player available” approach in the draft, a philosophy that has paid off well. While they may stick with this strategy for the 2025 NFL Draft, the team is also open to exploring other options, including trading down if the right opportunity arises.
“Lions GM Brad Holmes says he will continue his philosophy of drafting the best player as always, but trading down could be an option, in the right situation. Detroit currently holds the 28th overall pick,” ESPN’s Eric Woodyard shared on X.
With a roster that doesn’t have any major weaknesses, the Lions are in a position where they can focus on adding depth rather than filling urgent needs. This flexibility could allow them to approach the draft with a variety of strategies, possibly even using multiple picks to trade up.
Although the loss of key coaching staff and concerns about head coach Dan Campbell’s sometimes bold decisions remain, Detroit is poised to stay competitive, with a roster strong enough to challenge the league’s best teams.
