NFL Execs Rank Brian Branch No. 2 Safety — Kerby Joseph Not Far Behind
In ESPN’s newly released safety rankings—based on votes from NFL execs, coaches, and scouts—Brian Branch was named the No. 2 safety in the entire league, and his teammate Kerby Joseph wasn’t far behind at No. 5.
It’s a wild jump for Joseph, who didn’t even crack the list last year. In fact, someone from his camp reportedly called ESPN in 2024 asking why he wasn’t even mentioned. Well… nine interceptions, a First-Team All-Pro nod, and a breakout season later, Joseph has officially silenced the doubters.
And yet, it’s Branch who’s now being seen as the Lions’ top dog on the back end. One AFC exec praised the former Alabama standout’s versatility and football IQ, saying: “He’s been asked to do a lot in two years in Detroit and he’s handled it all.” Branch’s ability to cover, tackle, and read complex passing schemes makes him a unique weapon in Detroit’s scheme.
The duo has become a cornerstone for Aaron Glenn’s defense, and the league is clearly taking notice. Between Branch’s instincts and Joseph’s playmaking, the Lions’ secondary suddenly looks like one of the scariest in the NFC.
Detroit may be known for its aggressive pass rush—but the guys behind it are earning just as much respect.
