Lions Release Za’Darius Smith, Freeing Up Cap Space
The Detroit Lions are moving on from three-time Pro Bowler Za’Darius Smith, cutting the veteran pass rusher after just one season with the team. The move frees up $5.7 million in cap space, allowing the Lions to avoid paying Smith’s 2025 option bonus. While the team had interest in keeping him, the return of Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport made Smith expendable.
Smith had moments of impact last season but finished with just four sacks, three tackles for loss, and 10 quarterback hits in eight games. Now, he hits a free-agent market loaded with top-tier edge rushers, including Joey Bosa, Josh Sweat, and Haason Reddick. The Lions haven’t ruled out a reunion, but five teams could sign him before Detroit gets that chance:
Baltimore Ravens – A return to his original team could make sense, as Baltimore lacks edge-rushing depth.
Los Angeles Chargers – Jim Harbaugh’s defensive style might be a good fit for Smith, especially with Joey Bosa’s uncertain future.
Kansas City Chiefs – The defending champions need veteran pass rush help, and Smith could sign at a discount.
Dallas Cowboys – If DeMarcus Lawrence leaves, Smith could be an affordable replacement opposite Micah Parsons.
Washington Commanders – With cap space to spend, Washington may look to upgrade its defensive front.
While Smith was once a dominant force, injuries and age have slowed him down. The Lions are taking a calculated risk, banking on younger and healthier options to maintain their defensive momentum in 2025.
