The Baltimore Orioles have announced the passing of Brian Matusz, their former pitcher and beloved teammate, at the age of 37. The team shared the news in a heartfelt statement but did not disclose the cause of death.

“Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole, Brian Matusz,” the Orioles said. “A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face.”

A Rising Star with the Orioles

Brian Matusz’s journey to the Orioles began in 2008 when he was selected as the No. 4 overall pick in the MLB draft after a stellar college career at the University of San Diego, where he earned West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year honors. He made his MLB debut in August 2009, delivering a memorable performance by earning his first career win against the Detroit Tigers.

Matusz’s rookie campaign was a highlight, earning him a spot on Baseball America’s 2010 All-Rookie Team. Over the years, he transitioned from a starting pitcher to a reliable bullpen arm, excelling in critical situations. His time in Baltimore spanned seven seasons, during which he became a cherished member of the team and community.

A Career of Perseverance

In 2016, Matusz was traded to the Atlanta Braves but found himself on a new path shortly after when the Chicago Cubs picked him up. That season, he earned a World Series ring with the Cubs, cementing his legacy in baseball history. His final MLB connection came in 2017 with a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, a move he described as fulfilling “a childhood dream” after growing up in Phoenix.

Remembering Brian Matusz

Beyond his on-field achievements, Matusz was celebrated for his dedication to fans and his unwavering positivity. The Orioles’ statement reflected the deep connection he shared with the community and his teammates.

As the baseball world mourns his untimely loss, Brian Matusz will be remembered not only for his contributions to the game but for the kindness and spirit he brought to everyone around him. His family, friends, and fans remain in the thoughts of many during this difficult time.
