Broncos Back Reece Walsh to Keep Playing His Game Despite Ups and Downs
Reece Walsh had a mixed night in the Broncos’ hard-fought derby win over the Cowboys, but his teammates and coach are standing by him. The star fullback had some standout moments, including a crucial 40/20 kick that set up Brisbane’s first try and a pinpoint cut-out pass to Jesse Arthars that helped reclaim the lead. However, his performance also included five errors, two penalties, and a shoulder charge that landed him on report.
Despite some frustration, Walsh’s resilience impressed his teammates. Halfback Ben Hunt defended the young fullback, emphasizing that his confidence never wavers. “People will probably beat up on Reece for a few things, but he had some impressive moments,” Hunt said. “If he makes an error, he doesn’t take it with him—he’s back out there playing his footy, and we’ll encourage him to do that.”
Head coach Michael Maguire echoed those sentiments, saying Walsh just needs to push through. “Reece will be fine. Players go through these periods—it makes them better in the long run,” Maguire said. He also praised Walsh’s defensive efforts, highlighting his role in rallying the team.
Captain Adam Reynolds, who works closely with Walsh in the spine, is confident that hard work at training will pay off. “We nitpick at his little mistakes, but there’s a lot of great things he’s doing too,” Reynolds said. “It’ll turn. We’ll keep working, and no doubt he’ll come out of this.”
Next up, the Broncos face another Queensland rival, the Dolphins, in what’s shaping up to be another intense showdown. It’ll be Ben Hunt’s first “Battle for Brisbane” as a Bronco, and he expects a tough contest. “They’ll come ready to play,” Hunt said. “It’s going to be another massive game.”
The Broncos take on the Dolphins this Friday at Suncorp Stadium, looking to keep their momentum rolling.
