Browns Passed on Long-Term Wilson Deal, Weighing QB Options for 2025
The Cleveland Browns were in the mix for Russell Wilson during free agency, but they never saw him as a long-term answer at quarterback. That lack of commitment ultimately pushed Wilson toward the New York Giants, where he signed a one-year deal and is currently positioned as the team’s likely starter.
Browns’ QB Situation Remains Uncertain
Cleveland’s quarterback situation remains fluid heading into the 2025 season. Deshaun Watson is still under contract for two more years, but his second Achilles tear could sideline him for most—or all—of the season. That leaves newly acquired Kenny Pickett as the potential QB1.
Pickett, a former first-round pick, never found his footing in Pittsburgh before being traded to the Eagles last year. Now with the Browns, he sees himself as capable of stepping into the starting role.
Other QB Options Still in Play?
The Browns have been linked to several quarterbacks, but none of those moves appear imminent:
A trade for Kirk Cousins has been discussed but is now considered unlikely. The Falcons may not be willing to move him, and Cousins himself wants to wait until after the draft before making any decisions.
Veteran free agents like Joe Flacco and Carson Wentz have been mentioned as possibilities, but the Browns haven’t shown urgency in signing another passer.
NFL Draft options remain on the table. Cleveland has a Top-30 visit scheduled with Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough, and the team could target a mid-round prospect to develop behind Pickett.
For now, Pickett is in line to start, but the Browns are clearly keeping their options open as they head into the draft.
