Buckeye Blunder? Why Hiring Matt Patricia Would Be a Mistake

The Ohio State football program still doesn’t have a defensive coordinator. Right after the Buckeyes won the national championship, Jim Knowles decided to head to Penn State to take the same job with them.

There have been rumors that they might be interested in hiring Matt Patricia as their defensive coordinator. That would be the third different outside guy that has been rumored to take the job.

Why the Ohio State Football Team Hiring Matt Patricia Would Be a Disaster

Patricia has a wealth of NFL experience, but I wouldn’t say it’s good experience. He hasn’t coordinated a defense since 2017 with the Patriots. He failed as a head coach with the Lions and then failed again as the offensive coordinator for New England.

Patricia would be a disaster on the recruiting trail. He’s not very personable, which is half the battle on the recruiting trail. Recruits would head for other elite programs instead of coming to Columbus.

There’s also an incident that happened back in 1996. He was alleged to have sexually assaulted a woman. He was set to go on trial before the woman decided that going through a trial would have been too emotionally devastating, so the charges were dismissed.
