After a whirlwind free agency, Giants GM Joe Schoen sat down to talk about the team’s latest moves, including the arrivals of quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, and how they impact the upcoming draft.
Russell Wilson Brings Experience & Leadership
Schoen didn’t hold back when discussing Wilson’s value. “He’s a 10-time Pro Bowler, knows how to win, and has been producing at a high level for years,” he said. Wilson, who has thrown for at least 20 touchdowns almost every season, brings leadership and experience to a Giants team looking for stability at quarterback.
Schoen also appreciated Wilson’s attention to detail. “He did his homework. He knows the roster, not just the big names but the younger guys too,” he noted. Wilson has already expressed excitement about working with receivers like Jalin Hyatt and Malik Nabers, hinting at a deep-ball-heavy offense in 2025.
Jameis Winston Adds Veteran Depth
Given the Giants’ recent injury struggles at quarterback, signing Winston was a no-brainer. “We’ve played seven quarterbacks in two years. We needed a reliable backup,” Schoen explained. Winston’s ability to step in and deliver, combined with his leadership, made him a strong addition.
How Does This Impact the Draft?
With the No. 3 pick in the draft, many expected the Giants to go after a young quarterback. But with Wilson and Winston on board, the team now has flexibility. “We’re in a great spot,” Schoen said. “We don’t have to force anything. We can take the best player available and continue building.”
The Giants have five picks in the top 105, giving them plenty of options to improve the roster. While QB might still be in play, Schoen emphasized the team’s ability to strengthen multiple areas.
Strengthening the Defense & O-Line
The Giants also made key moves in the secondary, signing cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Jevón Holland to improve their ability to force turnovers. “We needed guys who can take the ball away, and these two fit perfectly,” Schoen said.
On the offensive line, bringing back Greg Van Roten ensures continuity. “We liked how the line played when Andrew Thomas was healthy. Keeping that group together was a priority,” he added.
Looking Ahead
With pro days wrapping up and draft meetings kicking off this week, Schoen and his team are entering the final phase of their draft prep. “We’ll finalize the board and be ready to make the best decisions for this team,” he said.
As the Giants head into the 2025 season, one thing is clear: they’re building a roster designed to compete now and for the future.
