Carney Calls Surprise Election, Says Canada Must Stand Firm Against Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is shaking things up, calling for an early election on April 28, months ahead of schedule. His reason? He wants a clear mandate to push back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade threats, which he says are putting Canada’s economy at risk.

Carney’s Liberal party has been gaining ground in the polls ever since Trump started targeting Canada with tariff threats and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped down in January. Now, Carney is hoping to ride that momentum into a strong election win.

“This is the biggest crisis of our generation,” Carney said, calling Trump’s trade moves “unjustified” and a direct threat to Canada’s sovereignty. By calling the snap election, he’s betting that Canadians will back him in standing up to the U.S. president.
