In a touching show of unity and compassion, Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer and several members of the Crimson Tide program traveled to Mississippi this week to support freshman quarterback Keelon Russell at his sister’s funeral.
The somber service, held in Russell’s hometown, brought together family, friends, and members of the Alabama football community to mourn the tragic loss. Russell’s younger sister passed away unexpectedly, and the devastating news sent shockwaves through those closest to the rising quarterback — including his new football family in Tuscaloosa.
Coach DeBoer, accompanied by staff members and select players, made the trip to stand alongside Russell during his time of grief. Their presence served not only as a tribute to Russell’s sister but also as a powerful reminder of the brotherhood and support system that exists within Alabama’s football culture.
“Keelon is a part of our family, and when one of us hurts, we all hurt,” Coach DeBoer said quietly after the service. “It was important for us to be here — not as coaches or teammates, but as people who care about him deeply.”
Russell, a four-star quarterback recruit and early enrollee, had quickly made an impression on and off the field with his leadership and humility. News of his sister’s passing prompted an outpouring of support from fans, teammates, and even rival programs across the country.
Several Alabama players took to social media in the days prior to the funeral, sending prayers and messages of solidarity. The team also held a private moment of silence during practice earlier in the week.
Though still early in his college career, Russell’s response to personal tragedy has revealed the maturity and strength many already saw in him. As he begins the long journey of healing, he does so with the full support of his team — something Coach DeBoer emphasized is non-negotiable.
“This is bigger than football,” DeBoer added. “It’s about showing up for each other, and we’ll continue to be here for Keelon every step of the way.”
The Crimson Tide will resume off-season workouts next week, but for now, their focus remains on supporting their young quarterback through this difficult time.
