Coach McVay’s Poker Face Slips—Is a Rookie QB in the Cards?

If Sean McVay Were Pinocchio, His Nose Would Be Out of Control

There’s been a ton of buzz lately about the Rams potentially drafting a new quarterback this year. Mock drafts keep tossing rookie QBs onto LA’s roster like it’s a done deal. And yeah, the Rams have met with a few QB prospects  probably even more than we know. That usually means you’re at least considering it. I mean, you don’t talk to a realtor unless you’re thinking about moving, right?

Still, meeting with QBs doesn’t guarantee anything. The right guy has to actually be available when it’s the Rams’ turn to pick, and with how crazy this draft class is, that’s far from certain.

Sports Illustrated’s Brock Vierra recently straight-up asked Rams head coach Sean McVay if they’re thinking about drafting a quarterback. McVay’s answer? Classic coach speak:

“I think that is unlikely. I’ll be honest, I haven’t really looked into the quarterbacks much. I feel great about our QB room. Sure, Stafford might only have a couple years left, but he’s earned the right to make that call whenever. I just haven’t done enough homework to really say. I don’t see  us doing it, but… maybe?”

Come on, Sean.

This is the same guy who can break down a random play from five years ago like it happened this morning. Rams players even joke about how obsessed he is with the game. There’s no way McVay hasn’t been keeping tabs on every decent rookie QB this year. That whole “I haven’t looked into it” bit? Not buying it.

The truth is, McVay’s not trying to tip the Rams’ hand. If he even hints at liking a certain QB, other teams might catch on and mess up their draft strategy. So he’s playing it cool.

Let’s be real: McVay probably knows everything about Jaxson Dart’s last college throw or Shedeur Sanders’ first touchdown. That’s just who he is. The idea that he’s out of the loop on this stuff? Please.

The Rams could grab a quarterback on any day of the Draft   Round 1, 2, 3, whenever. Whether they actually do or not is still up in the air, but one thing’s for sure: McVay’s not winging this. He knows exactly what he’s doing.

So yeah, don’t fall for the humble shrug. If the right QB is there when it’s their turn, don’t be surprised if the Rams go for it.
