Could Devin Singletary Be the Odd Man Out in the Giants’ Backfield?

The New York Giants’ backfield is suddenly looking crowded — and veteran Devin Singletary may be the one left without a chair when the music stops.

Last season, rookie Tyrone Tracy burst onto the scene, taking over the top running back job despite barely seeing action in the first month. Now, the Giants have doubled down on their youth movement, selecting Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Skattebo’s hard-nosed, all-purpose style has the potential to make an immediate impact, adding more competition to the mix.

That leaves Singletary, who joined the Giants as a bridge starter after Saquon Barkley’s exit, in an uncertain spot. He managed just 437 rushing yards last season — a career low — and doesn’t offer much on special teams, which limits his role. Reports from Pro Football Network suggest Singletary could become a trade or cut candidate, especially since moving on after June 1 would only leave $4.75 million in dead money.

Still, it’s not a slam dunk. Singletary is more proven than backups like Eric Gray or Dante Miller, and general manager Joe Schoen has emphasized the value of veteran leadership on the roster. Financially, cutting him wouldn’t generate massive savings, so the Giants may prefer to keep him as a mentor and depth piece — unless Singletary himself asks for a fresh start.

For now, Singletary’s future in New York hangs in the balance, with training camp likely to determine whether he’s still wearing blue this fall.
