The New York Giants made a move this offseason by signing Jameis Winston to a two-year, $8 million deal, but it turns out that might not mean he’s their guy under center. Reports from Sunday suggest the Giants are still considering adding former Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson.
Initially, it seemed like Winston’s signing meant the Giants were done shopping for QBs, but a source told Pro Football Talk that’s not the case. “They’re actually looking for a veteran starter just as much as the Browns—maybe even more than the Vikings,” the source said.
And if that wasn’t surprising enough, the same source claims the Giants are technically still in the running for Aaron Rodgers. While that seems like a long shot, it’s apparently not off the table.
The key clue here? Winston’s $4 million per year salary is pretty low for a starting QB, making it likely he was signed as a backup. As for the current roster, the only other QB is Tommy DeVito, who’s set to make just over $1 million in the final year of his contract and is expected to be the emergency third-stringer.
So, is Wilson (or even Rodgers) heading to New York? Stay tuned, because the Giants’ QB situation is far from settled.
