The Detroit Lions made a bold decision this offseason, parting ways with veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith. While the move made sense financially, it has sparked debate among fans and analysts alike. As free agency continues, speculation is growing over whether Smith could still make his way back to Detroit.
Detroit’s Decision to Let Smith Go
Za’Darius Smith’s release was primarily a business move. His contract structure made retaining him an expensive proposition, with nearly $9 million in bonuses due early in the league year. Rather than absorbing that cost, the Lions opted to free up $5.7 million in cap space, allowing them more flexibility for other roster needs.
At first glance, the move seemed logical. However, Detroit’s strategy for replacing Smith has left many scratching their heads. The team re-signed Marcus Davenport, a player with undeniable talent but a concerning injury history. Outside of that, the Lions have made only minor depth moves, relying on the upcoming draft to address their pass-rush needs.
Analysts Question the Lions’ Approach
Not everyone is convinced that moving on from Smith was the right call. NFL analyst Brad Berreman of SideLion Report voiced his concerns, questioning the team’s reliance on a deep edge-rusher class in the draft instead of securing a proven veteran.
“If it was a one-or-the-other choice between Smith and Davenport, there’s a solid argument the Lions made the wrong choice,” Berreman stated. He also pointed out that the team has done little to add a proven presence on the defensive line, which could be a risky strategy heading into 2025.
Could Smith Reunite with Detroit?
Despite his release, the possibility of a Smith return hasn’t been completely ruled out. As free agency drags on, he remains unsigned, leading some to wonder whether Detroit could make a move to bring him back at a reduced price.
“It would tilt toward unlikely if the reason for his release was rooted in being asked to take a pay cut,” Berreman noted. “But if he’s not finding what he expected on the open market, the door to come back is theoretically open.”
Smith’s ability to contribute is not in question. Last season, he posted nine sacks and 38 pressures between his time with the Cleveland Browns and the Lions. His versatility and experience could be valuable to a team with playoff aspirations.
Will the Lions Make Another Move?
For now, Detroit appears committed to its current plan, which hinges on young talent stepping up. However, if the team struggles to generate pressure early in the season, the front office may be forced to reconsider its stance.
As Smith waits for his next opportunity, one thing is clear—the Lions’ decision to let him go will continue to be scrutinized. Whether they ultimately regret it will depend on how their defense performs in 2025.
