Cowboys Connection: Dan Quinn Brings Retired Star Back to the Game

Dan Quinn is at it again, taking another former Cowboy to Washington. This time, it’s wide receiver Michael Gallup, who came out of retirement to sign with the Commanders.

Gallup had been making the rounds in free agency, including a visit with the Seahawks, but in the end, Quinn and Washington sealed the deal. It makes sense—Quinn was in Dallas for the last three seasons of Gallup’s time with the team, so there’s some familiarity there.

Washington has been aggressive this offseason, especially at wide receiver. After trading for Deebo Samuel, they lost Olamide Zaccheaus and Dyami Brown but brought back former Cowboy Noah Brown and added K.J. Osborn. Gallup will likely be a depth piece and a training camp competitor, but given his history, there’s hope he can carve out a role.

For Cowboys fans, it’s a bittersweet move. Prime Gallup was electric, but injuries—especially his ACL tear—derailed his time in Dallas. Over the last two seasons, he struggled with separation and was eventually overtaken by Jalen Tolbert in the depth chart. His numbers—73 catches, 842 yards, and six touchdowns across 31 games—didn’t live up to his potential.

Now, with Washington, Gallup gets another shot at proving himself. While Cowboys fans might not love seeing him in enemy colors, most will probably be rooting for him to turn things around—just not when he’s playing Dallas.

As for Quinn, well… nobody should be surprised anymore.
