The Dallas Cowboys are making moves to strengthen their running game as free agency kicks off. They’ve signed running back Javonte Williams (formerly with Denver) and offensive lineman Rob Jones (from Miami) to one-year deals. Jones’ contract could be worth up to $4.5 million, according to his agent.
Bringing in Williams raises questions about whether Rico Dowdle will return. Dowdle, an undrafted player, had a solid second half of the season and became the first undrafted Cowboys running back to hit 1,000 rushing yards. Still, Dallas finished 27th in rushing offense, and new head coach Brian Shottenheimer is making it clear they need to improve in that area.
The Cowboys are also expected to look at the draft, which is deep at the running back position, to strengthen their backfield. They hold the 12th overall pick.
On the offensive line, Jones will compete for the right guard spot, replacing the recently retired Zack Martin. Brock Hoffman took over that role last season after Martin’s season-ending ankle injury.
Defensively, the Cowboys re-signed safety Markquese Bell, who might play a more versatile role now that nickel cornerback Jourdan Lewis has signed with Jacksonville. Long snapper Trent Sieg is also returning, helping maintain stability for Pro Bowl kicker Brandon Aubrey. However, punter Bryan Anger, who served as Aubrey’s holder, is still a free agent.
