Deion Sanders isn’t heading to the NFL anytime soon. Despite interest from the Dallas Cowboys to bring him in as a replacement for Mike McCarthy, Sanders decided to stay put at Colorado.
Speaking with Troy Aikman on We Got Time Today on Tubi, Sanders made it clear that coaching in the pros just isn’t for him. “I couldn’t coach pro ball,” he admitted. “I know it was a cute idea, but the way they practice, the way they go about things—I couldn’t take it. As someone who loves the game, I just wouldn’t let that happen on my watch.”
This isn’t a new stance for Sanders. Back in 2022, he told 60 Minutes that no NFL job could tempt him. So far, he’s 13-12 as Colorado’s head coach, and last season, he led the Buffaloes to a 9-4 record while his star player, Travis Hunter, won the Heisman Trophy.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys haven’t been to a Super Bowl since 1996, back when Sanders, Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, and Charles Haley were on the roster. Aikman thinks Sanders would’ve been a great fit in Dallas, saying his presence alone would’ve made it clear who was in charge—something the Cowboys could use.
Some of Sanders’ former teammates were reportedly annoyed that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t even give him a formal interview. Even Michael Irvin, a die-hard Cowboys supporter, wasn’t happy with how things played out.
Instead of Sanders, Dallas decided to promote offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach, keeping things in-house. Whether that decision pays off remains to be seen.
