As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for the 2025 season, they’re putting their faith in another potential hidden gem. Linebacker Justin Barron, who went undrafted out of Syracuse, recently signed with the team. His deal includes a $20,000 signing bonus and a roster bonus of $234,000 if he secures a spot on the practice squad this year.

The Cowboys have a strong track record of finding undrafted players who turn out to be valuable contributors in the NFL. Some current undrafted players expected to make Dallas’ 53-man roster are Terence Steele, Markquese Bell, Juanyeh Thomas, and Hunter Luepke. Historically, Dallas has hit the jackpot with undrafted talents like Tony Romo, Dan Bailey, and Ron Leary, so there’s reason for optimism here.

Barron has an opportunity to contribute early, especially as the team waits on breakout linebacker DeMarvion Overshown to return from injury. Kenneth Murray, a recent free agent signing, is expected to start at MIKE linebacker, while Marist Liufau, entering his second year, looks set to play SAM linebacker. Barron will be competing with Jack Sanborn and fellow rookie Shemar James for the WILL linebacker role during Overshown’s absence.

Analyst Ben Cooper from Pro Football Focus has his eye on Barron, listing him as an undrafted free agent worth watching this offseason. Cooper points out, “Barron earned 70.0-plus PFF run-defense grades in each of the past three seasons, and his 263 tackles over the span formed one of the highest totals in college football among linebackers and box safeties. He also allowed just two touchdowns on 144 career targets in coverage while breaking up nine passes.”

One of Barron’s strengths is his versatility. In college, he played multiple positions including slot corner, linebacker, EDGE, and free safety. While he’ll likely start on the practice squad and contribute on special teams, his skill set makes him a valuable piece for Dallas’ defense.

Keep an eye on Barron during training camp — he could surprise many as he fights for his place on the roster.
