A Championship Mindset Drives Reed’s Move to Detroit
When D.J. Reed entered free agency this offseason, he had no shortage of suitors. Widely regarded as the top cornerback on the market and one of the best available players overall, Reed had his pick of destinations. Yet, despite the opportunity to command a record-breaking contract, he opted for a deal with the Detroit Lions worth $16 million per year—only the fifth-largest contract at his position this offseason.
Now, the dynamic cornerback has shed light on what truly drew him to Detroit, and it wasn’t just the money.
Reed’s Super Bowl Ambitions
In a March 28 appearance on The Jim Rome Show, Reed made it clear that his priority in free agency wasn’t the highest paycheck but rather the best opportunity to chase a championship.
“I wanted a chance to win a Lombardi, bro. That’s something that I want to do. I want to win a Lombardi with my teammates, with my coaches, with my organization. I wanted to go somewhere and play good football, meaningful football. That was the main thing for me,” Reed explained.
After three strong seasons with the New York Jets, Reed was ready for a change of scenery—one that offered a legitimate shot at postseason success. During his tenure in New York, the Jets failed to produce a single winning season, making his goal of winning a Super Bowl an uphill battle.
A Perfect Fit in Detroit’s Rising Defense
Reed now joins a Lions team that came within a game of the Super Bowl last season. Detroit’s defense has steadily improved under head coach Dan Campbell, and the addition of a shutdown corner like Reed could be the missing piece in their championship puzzle.
Statistically, Reed has been among the league’s most reliable defensive backs. Over his last three seasons, he allowed just 6.2 yards per target and held opposing quarterbacks to a 60.1% completion percentage when throwing his way. The Lions will be counting on that level of play to elevate their secondary and give their defense the final boost needed to contend for a title.
With Reed now in the mix, Detroit is making a clear statement: they are not just aiming to compete—they are aiming to win it all. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Reed and the Lions as they look to turn Super Bowl aspirations into reality.
