D.J. Reed Opens Up About Why He Chose the Lions
D.J. Reed had plenty of options in free agency, but when it came down to picking a team, he made his choice for one simple reason—he wants to win a Super Bowl.
Reed, who was considered the top cornerback available this offseason, signed with the Detroit Lions for $16 million per year. That wasn’t even the biggest offer he received, but for him, it wasn’t just about the money. During an appearance on The Jim Rome Show on March 28, Reed explained why he wanted to be in Detroit.
“I wanted a chance to win a Lombardi, bro. That’s something that I want to do. I want to win a Lombardi with my teammates, with my coaches, with my organization. I wanted to go somewhere and play good football, meaningful football. That was the main thing for me.”
That’s a big shift for Reed, who spent the last three seasons with the New York Jets. While he played at a high level, the Jets never posted a winning record during his time there. Now, he’s stepping into a Lions team that won 15 games last season and made it to the NFC Championship the year before.
Reed brings a strong track record to Detroit’s defense, allowing just 6.2 yards per target and a 60.1% completion percentage during his time with the Jets. The Lions are hoping he’ll be a key piece in their push for a championship. If things go as planned, he might just get that Lombardi Trophy he’s chasing.
