The Dallas Cowboys have been on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator following Mike Zimmer’s retirement. It now appears they’re turning to a familiar name to fill the role.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that Matt Eberflus is set to become the Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator. Eberflus was in Dallas on Monday as the two sides worked to finalize an agreement. This marks a homecoming for Eberflus, who spent seven years with the Cowboys as an assistant coach from 2011 to 2017.
Eberflus left Dallas to become the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, a position he held through 2021. During his time in Indianapolis, the defense consistently performed well, ranking in the top 10 in points allowed twice. After leaving the Colts, Eberflus took over as head coach of the Chicago Bears. However, his tenure there was rocky, ending with a 4-8 start this season and an overall record of 14-32.
While his stint as head coach didn’t pan out, Eberflus has proven his value as a defensive coordinator, something the Cowboys could benefit from. This move comes after Dallas promoted Brian Schottenheimer to head coach, a decision that didn’t sit well with many fans. Eberflus’ arrival may restore some confidence.
