The Dallas Cowboys just made an interesting move in free agency by picking up offensive lineman Hakeem Adeniji.
They officially signed him on Thursday. He was with the Cleveland Browns last year but didn’t get to play because of a knee injury during the preseason.
This will be the fourth team Adeniji has played for since entering the league in 2020. He was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round that year and also had a stint with the Minnesota Vikings.
Right now, there’s still some uncertainty at the right guard spot for the Cowboys. Adeniji, who can play both tackle and guard, will be competing for that role along with guys like Charles, Jones, Brock Hoffman, and T.J. Bass. They’re all trying to fill the gap left by Zack Martin, while also aiming for backup roles across the line.
Cowboys writer Tommy Yarrish pointed out that Dallas might still go after an offensive lineman in the draft, which wouldn’t be surprising—they’ve taken one in each of the last seven drafts. So, fans should watch out to see if they keep that streak alive next week.
As for Adeniji, he brings some solid experience. He’s played in 39 games with over 1,000 snaps under his belt, most of them in 2021 with the Bengals. He even played in the Super Bowl against the Rams.
Dallas is looking for Adeniji to boost their protection and run game. Last season, they allowed 38 sacks (ranking 19th in the league), and their rushing offense was near the bottom at 27th overall.
Right now, the Cowboys are clearly using free agency to patch holes on their roster. Whether through more signings or the upcoming draft, they’re focused on getting back to the playoffs after finishing 7-10 last year. They’ll be starting fresh with new head coach Brian Schottenheimer in 2025.
