Dan Campbell Calls Detroit His Perfect Match, Says He’s Not Leaving Anytime Soon

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently opened up about his deep connection to the city and franchise in a heartfelt interview with Dallas radio station 96.7 AM The Ticket. While speaking in his home state of Texas, Campbell essentially poured his heart out about why Detroit feels like the only place he’s ever truly belonged in football.

For Lions fans and NFL observers, it’s obvious that Campbell has been an ideal match for the Motor City. In just four years, he’s led the team to levels of success it hasn’t seen in decades. But beyond the wins, it’s his grit, energy, and no-nonsense approach that mirror the very spirit of Detroit itself.

Still, hearing that passion straight from Campbell adds another layer of authenticity.

“I belong here. It fits,” Campbell said. “I say it all the time, you don’t know when you’re going to get an opportunity or even if you will at head coach. There’s probably only one team that felt like I was the guy, and I’m there. It’s Detroit.”

He continued by listing all the things that make the job special for him—from ownership to fans to the city’s blue-collar identity.

“Just everything about it was the right fit for me. From the ownership to the city to the field, the location, the fans, just, man, the blue-collar attitude of this city, it’s just perfect. It fits me like a glove.”

Campbell also took a moment to praise Lions owner Sheila Hamp, crediting her leadership and support as one of the biggest reasons he feels so at home.

“When you’ve got an owner who just tells you, ‘Look, do whatever you need to do, and I will get you whatever you need to have success. Whatever we need from a resources standpoint, I’ll do. I just want you to do it and be yourself.’ When somebody tells you that, I don’t have to worry about what I look like, what I say, I’m just me.”

That freedom to be himself has clearly resonated with Campbell.

“Man, it’s a blessing. I’m fortunate. I love the gig I’m at, and I have no plans of leaving,”he said.

Still, Campbell knows there’s work to be done. His eyes are firmly on the ultimate prize.

“But we’ve got to win one [Super Bowl], man. We’ve got to win one, and then once you do that, see if you can win another one. But that’s the goal.”

The Lions made sure their head coach isn’t going anywhere soon, signing Campbell and GM Brad Holmes to contract extensions through 2027. If Campbell’s words are any indication, he’s not just coaching in Detroit—he’s home.
