Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently appeared on The LiucciCast, hosted by his longtime friend Billy Liucci, for a wide-ranging and heartfelt conversation. With training camp just around the corner, Campbell took time to reflect on his journey—from his days at Texas A&M to his deepening connection with Detroit and its passionate sports fans.
Campbell, who’s quickly become one of the NFL’s most beloved coaches, seems to be embracing every bit of his time in the Motor City. Just days before, he joined a Dallas radio station where he expressed how much he’s enjoying life in Detroit. Now, chatting with Liucci on TexAgs’ YouTube channel, that love for the city came through even more clearly.
From the beginning of the interview, it was obvious the two share a strong bond. Their conversation flowed easily, covering their shared college memories, Campbell’s playing days, and his path through the coaching ranks to becoming the face of the Lions.
As Liucci described the electric energy in Detroit after their 2023 playoff win—“You go to Detroit right now, and it’s in the building, in the tunnels, it’s whoever is getting on and off the elevator”—Campbell nodded in agreement, sharing what he saw early on.
“It means a lot you know, and I have said this before, but I had my eyes open to this place when I played here,” Campbell said. “Oh my god, this is a sleeping giant. This could be one of the best places ever to come and play and be a part of this. They love their Detroit Lions, they love sports… this could be something special.”
