Dan Orlovsky Breaks Down Why the John Morton Hire Will Pay Off for Lions

The Detroit Lions have quickly moved to fill the void left by the departure of both of their coordinators, and with offensive coordinator John Morton now in the spotlight, the focus is on who will take over play-calling duties.

While Morton may not be a household name to many, his strong offensive background suggests he is well-suited to keep the Lions’ potent offense firing on all cylinders.

On “The Pat McAfee Show” earlier this week, former Lions quarterback and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky shared his confidence in Morton’s appointment.

“I don’t know a lot about John Morton, but I trust Dan Campbell,” Orlovsky said. “He’s been part of Detroit in the past. I was never there with him. Losing Ben Johnson is a big deal. He’s one of the best play-callers and play designers in the league. But Morton has experience with Sean Payton, who is known for his brilliant offensive mind. People say Dan Campbell had a significant impact on Detroit’s offense, and as long as Campbell and Brad Holmes are in charge, they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt. The core players are still there, including one of the best offensive lines in football, along with a wealth of talent on the perimeter. I won’t say they won’t miss a beat, but they have the necessary pieces in place.”

Morton’s previous stint in Detroit as a senior offensive assistant in 2022 shows that Campbell has confidence in him, making it likely that the two have a well-established rapport.

Campbell himself is also optimistic about the Lions’ Super Bowl window, which he believes remains wide open due to the strong culture they’ve built.

“We’ve got that core group in place,” Campbell stated. “Some guys have re-signed, and we’re working on the contracts of others. But yes, we absolutely believe the window is open. We’ve got the right culture, the right identity, and the players who fit that. We’ve got key players in all the right positions to succeed, and they’re made the right way.”

With Morton now in charge of maintaining the momentum of a top-10 offense, the Lions are in good hands. With Campbell’s leadership and Holmes’ roster-building expertise, fans have reason to believe in the team’s continued success.
