David Montgomery is done with being almost great.
As the Detroit Lions gear up for the 2025 NFL season, the veteran running back made it clear that “close” isn’t good enough anymore. After falling just short of the Super Bowl last season, Montgomery says the team is hungrier than ever — and he’s leading the charge.
“Everybody’s tired of being close,” Montgomery said. “We’ve been knocking on the door. Now it’s time to kick it down.”
The Lions, under head coach Dan Campbell, have transformed into one of the NFL’s most respected contenders. But for Montgomery, respect isn’t the goal — a championship is. The running back emphasized that the team isn’t settling for playoff appearances or moral victories this year. They’re focused on finishing the mission they started.
“We’ve got all the pieces. Now we’ve got to put it all together and finish,” he added.
With training camp in full swing, Montgomery’s mindset seems to reflect the energy throughout the locker room. The Lions believe their time is now — and their running back just lit the fire.
