David Montgomery Opens Up on Super Bowl Heartbreak: ‘Being Close Just Isn’t Enough’

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery didn’t hold back when reflecting on how close the team came to reaching the Super Bowl last season — and how much it still stings.

In a recent interview, Montgomery opened up about the emotional rollercoaster that came with falling just short of the biggest stage in football. The Lions were one half away from their first-ever Super Bowl appearance before things unraveled in the NFC Championship game against the 49ers. For Montgomery, the pain of that moment still lingers.

“It’s tough, man,” he admitted. “You get so close — you can taste it. And then it’s gone. That kind of loss sticks with you.”

Montgomery emphasized that the near miss has become fuel for the team heading into the 2025 season. He said the hunger, focus, and sense of unfinished business have only intensified in the locker room.

“We’re not just trying to be good. We’re trying to be great. Nobody’s satisfied with being ‘almost’ there,” he said. “This time, we’re coming for everything.”

With Montgomery poised to play a major role in the Lions’ offensive attack once again, fans are hoping his frustration turns into fire — and that this year, Detroit doesn’t just knock on the door of the Super Bowl… they kick it in.
