David Montgomery’s Fantasy Ceiling in 2025? This Bold Prediction Holds Weight

David Montgomery as a Top-10 Fantasy RB in 2025? Not That Bold
The Detroit Lions have the best running back duo in the NFL right now, and fantasy football managers have been wondering—what happens when one guy is out? We got a taste of that late last season when David Montgomery missed time, and Jahmyr Gibbs went off, helping a lot of people win their fantasy leagues.

With Ben Johnson gone, new offensive coordinator John Morton is taking over, but don’t expect a major shift. The Lions’ offense will still be built around the run, meaning plenty of work for both backs. Plus, Gibbs has even more untapped potential as a pass-catcher, something Morton might try to unleash.

Montgomery has been the “Thunder” to Gibbs’ “Lightning”—or “Knuckles” to Gibbs’ “Sonic,” if you like that nickname better. Even after missing the final three games last season, Montgomery still finished as the RB18 in 0.5-point PPR. Meanwhile, Gibbs, thanks to his late-season surge, ended up as the RB2.

A “Bold” Prediction That’s Not So Bold
Fantasy Life’s Gene Clemons recently made some early “bold” predictions for 2025, including Montgomery cracking the top 10 among fantasy running backs. His reasoning? If Montgomery had stayed healthy in 2024, he might have been right there already—he finished as RB13 in 2023 and was top-15 in points per game last season.

Of course, there are concerns. Montgomery has scored 25 rushing touchdowns on 404 carries in two seasons with the Lions, which is a crazy-high rate that could regress. Plus, he’s turning 27, which is an age where some running backs start to slow down.

But if Montgomery stays healthy and keeps up a similar workload, there’s no reason he can’t sneak into that top-10 fantasy RB conversation. So, while some might call it a “bold” prediction, it actually makes a lot of sense.
