Mark Bullock took a look at DE Deatrich Wise’s game film and gave us the lowdown on what he could bring to the Commanders. Wise, who’s been in the NFL for eight years, spent all of that time with the New England Patriots, winning two Super Bowls. He’s not a game-changer but could be useful for the defensive line rotation in Washington.
What stands out about Wise is his size—he’s 6’5″ and weighs 280 pounds, which is a lot for a typical edge rusher. You might think he’s here to help with the run defense, but Bullock points out that Wise was mostly used as a pass rusher in New England. He’s not racking up huge sack numbers (averaging 4.25 a season), but he’s similar to Dante Fowler in that regard. Fowler had a solid season for Washington last year, so the Commanders are hoping to get similar results from Wise.
What makes Wise different from Fowler is his playstyle. He doesn’t have the same burst, but he’s got long arms (nearly 36 inches), which he uses to his advantage against blockers. In a play against Trent Williams, one of the NFL’s best tackles, Wise showed how his reach helps him keep offensive linemen at bay. If the Commanders coaches can get Wise to use that length more often, he could be a real threat.
