Defensive Boost: Chiefs Bring Back DE on 1-Year Deal

Charles Omenihu thought his time with the Kansas City Chiefs was over. His contract expired, and he didn’t get an offer to return. In fact, no other teams seemed interested in him either. But then, out of nowhere on Thursday, the Chiefs turned things around and offered him a one-year deal worth up to $7 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

There was some buzz that the Detroit Lions were going to pick him up once free agency kicked off. They were hoping he could fill the gap left by Za’Darius Smith’s departure and team up with Aidan Hutchinson, who’s recovering from a knee injury. However, the Lions backed off after concerns about Omenihu’s injury history and off-field issues. Last season, he served a six-game suspension for disciplinary reasons and also tore his ACL during the playoffs, causing him to miss most of 2024.

Despite limited playtime in 2024, Omenihu still managed to post one sack and 12 quarterback pressures over just 154 defensive snaps. That’s not a lot of action, but Andy Reid is banking on seeing the same player the Chiefs were high on before 2023. Omenihu, now 27, was a fifth-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2019. After spending a few years with them, he was traded to the 49ers for a late-round pick in his rookie contract’s third year
