John Cominsky’s time in the NFL has come to an end. After missing the entire 2024 season due to injury, the veteran defensive lineman announced his retirement on Monday, citing the toll of multiple injuries.
Cominsky, 29, spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Lions after being claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons in 2022. He quickly carved out a key role in Detroit’s defensive front, starting eight games in his first year with the team and earning a two-year, $8.5 million extension. His 2023 campaign was his best, as he played in 16 games, recorded a career-high 36 tackles, and added two sacks. However, an MCL tear sidelined him before the 2024 season, and he never returned to the field.
In his statement, Cominsky expressed pride in his six-year career but acknowledged that the physical toll had become too much. He leaves the game with 60 combined regular-season and postseason appearances and just over $10 million in career earnings. With his retirement, the Lions lose a veteran presence along the defensive line as they look to build on their recent success.
