Deion Sanders, famously known as “Coach Prime,” has been the subject of ongoing speculation regarding a potential NFL coaching career ever since the college football season ended. The Dallas Cowboys, in particular, were frequently mentioned as a possible destination for Sanders until they ultimately filled their head coaching vacancy.
After a disappointing 7-10 season that landed them third in the NFC East, the Cowboys decided to part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy. Rumors had circulated that Sanders might be in the mix, especially given the hype surrounding him and his son, Shedeur Sanders. However, those speculations were put to rest when the Cowboys hired Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach.
Despite the position being filled, Sanders made it clear this week that coaching in the NFL isn’t something he’s interested in pursuing — not now, and possibly not ever.
Speaking on his talk show, We Got Time Today, on Tuesday, Sanders didn’t hold back:
“I couldn’t coach pro ball,” Sanders said. “I know it was cute, but I couldn’t coach pro ball because the way they practice, the way they go about it — I couldn’t take it. As a man and as a football enthusiast, I care about the game. The game is still providing for Troy and me, so there’s no way I could allow that to happen on my watch. That would be tough.”
Sanders’ firm stance suggests he’s happy where he is, coaching the Colorado Buffaloes and aiming to bring them success in college football. Of course, things in the football world can always change — especially if the NFL team that drafts his son Shedeur comes calling — but for now, Coach Prime seems content right where he is.
